School councils were established with the Massachusetts Education Reform Act of 1993 to ensure the contributions of staff, parents and community representatives with the principal. The charge of the Sprague School Council is to serve as an advisory board to the principal, to discuss initiatives and procedures that support education, and to develop and update a comprehensive School Improvement Plan that identifies goals to enhance instructional excellence. The council meets monthly and reports out from time to time. Please contact representatives to share your ideas. Sprague School Council Representatives 2011-2012
Sprague School Improvement Plan 2010 – 2011 Goal #1 To create a community comprised of students, staff, teachers, families and community members who support and enhance student learning. Actions: · Conduct weekly HEART Value Assemblies that at their core have three thematic elements: 5th grade leadership, teamwork and demonstrations of student excellence. · Develop the notion of 5th Graders as “student leaders” through in-school efforts (e.g., assisting with the HEART Value Assemblies) as well as after school initiatives (e.g., Car Wash, visiting Alzheimer’s Center, babysitting during conferences, et al.). · Implement enhanced communication and collaboration between school and community (e.g., The Pulse, weekly principal email, the principal and a teacher representative attend and speak at each PTO Board and PTO Meeting, and myriad parent-staff committees). Goal #2 Continue to nurture a vibrant, self-renewing climate with high academic expectations and an inclusive environment. Actions: · Establish a mentor program to provide student support (e.g., WHS/5th Grade Mentoring Program). · Continue the focus on Response to Intervention (RTI) as a means of meeting individual academic needs and making curriculum accessible for all students. · Collaborate as a staff to develop, implement and monitor SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Results Oriented and Timely) at each grade level. · 80% of students will score in either Proficient/Advanced on their respective MCAS exams. · Continue to expand opportunities for social and academic inclusion with the ISS program. Goal # 3 Continue implementation of district curriculum initiatives. Actions: · Implement and monitor Grade 2 AIMSweb instructional and assessment techniques in the area of reading (evaluates reading rate and comprehension). · Continue to actively participate in the English/Language Arts Curriculum Review. · Implement the revised Investigations program in grades K, 1 and 2 and participate in the related professional development. Goal # 4 Enhance the safety of our school and support a positive learning environment. Actions: · Enhance existing Evacuation and Lockdown procedures and practice them throughout the school year. · Highlight the HEART values as a basis for a respectful environment and honor them as part of our daily behavior (e.g., Open Circle curriculum/classroom meetings) and weekly assemblies. · Read Schools Where Everyone Belongs by Stan Davis as a school council and develop a Sprague Action Plan.
Goal # 5 Develop opportunities to improve our awareness of Sprague’s role in the larger global community through: Actions: · Create and implement K-5 school wide community service initiatives as well as ongoing and new initiatives (e.g., Green Schools efforts, Give Back Day, Sprague Community Garden, et al.). · Create and foster a partnership with the Wellesley Food Service Pantry as our local community service partner. · Develop and implement a Sprague-Haiti support network. Addendum Sprague’s HEART Values are: Help, Effort, Appreciation, Respect, and Teamwork.
